Dewey's chapters, question 1

Is it possible to reconcile the conflict affecting education for and in a democratic society between nationalistic principles and wider social aims?

  1. After watching the videos on this blog, I think that it may not be possible because the larger community has so many diverse interests. Each scenario presents a different approach that ultimately can be corrupted by conflicting interests.

  2. you would hope that nationalistic goals would be similar to wider social aims as this is the only to to create some sense of lasting harmony in our world. but unfortunately, humanity seems to be a short-sighted and often selfish species. we find it difficult to think beyond ourselves and the present, especially past our lifetime (exhibit A: our current destruction of the planet by consuming resources at an incredible rate, myself included), so to have people sacrifice their current sense of stability for an intangible future ideal, seems hard to envision.
